Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
