Italy's Court Legend Nicola Pietrangeli Passes Away at Ninety-Two

Italian sport mourns a true legend: Nicola Pietrangeli, a double French Open champion, passed away at ninety-two.

Pietrangeli etched his name by emerging as the pioneering Italian to secure a Grand Slam singles title, securing his maiden triumph at the French Open in 1959 and successfully defending the prestigious trophy a year later.

With a staggering 48 career titles, Pietrangeli was widely considered the country's finest player prior to the emergence of current star and four-times major winner Jannik Sinner.

"Italian tennis is mourning an titan. Nicola Pietrangeli, the sole Italian enrolled in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, has died," confirmed the national federation.

Alongside his two French Open triumphs, Pietrangeli also was the finalist in Paris in both 1961 and 1964.

He holds a remarkable 164 matches played for Italy in the prestigious team competition, winning 120 of them, and guided his country to its maiden title in 1976.

Organisers of the Italian Open, an event where he was a two-time winner, said: "We are profoundly saddened that we bid farewell to Nicola Pietrangeli, a veritable legend of Italian tennis..."
