Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
