Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
